Edward J. Gerner Scholarship Program

 

The Edward J. Gerner Scholarship is funded by The Western Pennsylvania Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (WPHIMSS). WPHIMSS is one of over fifty affiliated chapters of HIMSS, the largest healthcare management and information systems professional organization in the nation. 
  
This scholarship was established to help financially support the education of students who have established career goals related to healthcare information management and technology.  The successful applicant may be enrolled in a technical major such as computer science or, a health related discipline or an area of study that includes both healthcare and technology such as informatics. This year a scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.
 
Eligibility Criteria
The student must be/have:

  • Pursuing a career related to the optimal use of healthcare information technology (IT) and management systems for the betterment of healthcare.

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary institution as a degree seeking or post-doctorial student.  Acceptable programs include those leading to an (1) associate degree, (2) baccalaureate degree, (3) master’s degree, (4) professional degree such as a Doctor of Medicine (MD)  (5) doctoral degree as well as any student completing a (6) post doctoral program.

  •  Completed at least one semester of their educational program concluding Fall 2018.

  •  At least a 3.0 grade point average if enrolled in an undergraduate program or be a student in good standing if enrolled in a graduate program. A student in good standing would not be on probation or provisional status.

  • A member of WPHIMSS.

 
Application Requirements 
A completed application packet must include:

  1. Completed application form

  2. One page Letter of reference – written by a faculty member who has worked with you within the last two years.  The reference letter should speak to your (a) leadership skills, (b) communication skills including writing skills, and (c) demonstrated interest in health information management.

  3. One/Two Page Resume - The Resume should include your career goals, work experience and any other activities that reflect your interest in healthcare information management.

  4. One page essay on how you will use the scholarship award.
