Speaker Bios

Shirley J. Brandon RN, MSN is a Coordinator, Clinical Informatics at Excela Health. She oversees clinical information system operations throughout Excela Health system. She works with a clinical informatics team who works collaboratively with members of the health team to ensure integration of all clinical information systems and standardize work flow. Her current project includes preparation and planning of a new emergency department electronic system.

Shirley has her Masters in Nursing from Waynesburg University and under graduate from Carlow University. Her nursing back ground is medical surgical although for the majority of her nursing career has been in emergency care. She was the stroke clinician at UPMC St Margaret where she supported the facility in achieving Joint Commission stroke accreditation. In 2011 she had an abstract published and was invited to speak at the International Stroke Conference.

Shirley has worked as a Unit Director at UPMC Shadyside hospital on 6 West this was a neurological surgical 30 bed unit with a 6 bed step down unit. She also worked as a Unit Director in a 24 bed emergency department at UPMC St Margaret. She currently is a member of American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and Emergency Nurses association (ENA).

W. Michael Widmann, MSN, RN-BC, CCRN is a Coordinator of Clinical Informatics at the Excela Health System in Southwestern Pennsylvania. In this role, Mike acts as the bridge between the bedside clinicians and the Information Technology Department. He serves as a change agent to translate and integrate evidence-based practice and standard work through the use of technology and EHR documentation. Mike is currently coordinating the implementation of smart room technology into the renovations of the Intensive Care Unit at Westmoreland Hospital.

Mike received his Master of Science – Nursing Informatics degree from American Sentinel University in February, 2014. He became a certified Informatics Nurse through the American Nurses Credentialing Center in April 2016. Mike’s nursing background includes 13 years of critical care nursing as a bedside nurse, clinical nurse coordinator (frontline supervisor), and clinical education specialist. He has been a member of the Excela’s Clinical Informatics team since 2014.

Mike has presented to the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania about Excela’s implementation of the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program. He also participated as a panel member at Cerner’s Health Conference 2016 describing the implementation of evidence-based advisors for sepsis treatment and venothromboembolism prevention. Mike is currently a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). He also serves as the Secretary for the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of ANIA.
